IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Hello Suhani,

Hope you are doing well. I am so excited for your visit. Unfortunately, I will be at work at that time but I have already made arrangements so that you will not find it difficult to get into my house.

I have left a spare key with my neighbor, Ms. Smith, who lives next door in House No. 14. She has kindly agreed to let you in, so just knock on her door and introduce yourself. Once you get the key, make yourself at home.

To reach my house, from the train station exit on Oak Street and from there catch bus No. 10 to Green Avenue and get off on Brooks Avenue. It is only a five minutes walk from the stop. If you prefer, you can also book a taxi or cab which will only take 15 minutes from the train station to my house depending on the traffic.

I will be arriving at home by 6 p.m. We could go out for dinner in the newly opened Indian restaurant nearby or we can just order online and relax at home.

Waiting to see you soon!

Regards,

Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement with your neighbor, provided specific directions from the train station, and suggested evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task, providing sufficient detail to ensure the reader knows exactly what to do upon arrival.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the key arrangements to directions and finally to evening plans. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Once you get the key' and 'If you prefer', which help guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics, making the letter easy to follow. The overall structure is coherent and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for this task. Phrases like 'made arrangements', 'kindly agreed', and 'depending on the traffic' are used accurately and naturally. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is mostly standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or descriptive language, such as 'conveniently located' or 'straightforward directions'. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The grammar is generally accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For example, the use of conditional structures ('If you prefer, you can also...') and temporal clauses ('Once you get the key...') shows good control. There are very few errors; the writing is clear and easy to read. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex sentence forms, such as using relative clauses or passive voice, to add more sophistication to your writing.
