A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Hello Suhani,
Hope you are doing well. I'm really looking forward to your visit. Unfortunately, I will be at work at that time but I have already made arrangements so that you will not find it difficult to get into my house.
I have left a spare key with my neighbor, Ms. Smith, who lives next door in House No. 14. She has kindly agreed to let you in, so just knock on her door and introduce yourself. Once you have the key, make yourself at home.
To reach my house, leave the train station through the Oak Street from there catch bus No. 10 to Green Avenue and get off at Brooks Avenue. It is only a five-minute walk from the stop. If you prefer, you can also take a taxi or cab which will only take 15 minutes from the train station to my house depending on the traffic.
I will be arriving at home by 6 p.m. We could go out for dinner in the newly opened Indian restaurant nearby or we can just order online and relax at home.
Waiting to see you soon!
Regards,
Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements with your neighbor, provided specific directions from the train station, and proposed two distinct options for your evening together. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly, which is suitable for a letter to a family member. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the key arrangements to the directions and finally to the evening plans. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Once you have the key', 'To reach my house', and 'If you prefer' effectively to link your sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a semi-formal/informal letter. Phrases like 'make yourself at home', 'kindly agreed', and 'newly opened' are natural and accurate. There is a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, incorporating a few more idiomatic expressions or slightly more sophisticated collocations could elevate the response further. There are no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good command of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the conditional 'If you prefer, you can also take a taxi...' and the time clause 'Once you have the key...'. The majority of your sentences are error-free. There is a minor slip in the phrase 'leave the train station through the Oak Street', where 'the' is unnecessary before 'Oak Street'. However, this does not affect the clarity of your instructions. Punctuation is generally accurate throughout the letter.
