IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam, I hope you are doing splendidly. It's been since we last spoke. I am really excited to meet you in the evening. However, I will not be available in the morning when you arrive, but have made necessary arrangements for your stay.

I wanted to inform you that in my absence, you don't need to think about accessing the premises because I have handed the keys to our maid, who resides next to us. Moreover, I have cooked delicious pasta since it's your favourite dish and recently purchased a bed for making your stay more convenient.

The best thing that you might like is the location as it is easily accessible from the train station. This is because you just need to board an express bus that goes towards the Central Point Mall. The fifth stop, namely Dundonald Avenue, is where my house is located, next to a supermarket.

I am away in the morning for a business meeting and will be back by 5 p.m. in the evening. Furthermore, I have planned numerous activities to perform with you such as go-karting, skiing, and snow tubing at the Blue Mountain spot. I am very confident that you will definitely enjoy these unique activities.

I hope you follow the directions that I mentioned. I am very curious to see you and wish you the best throughout your journey.

Best regards,

Rayan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided logical directions from the station, and proposed specific evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the ideas are well-developed. The response is fully relevant to the prompt, and you have maintained a consistent focus throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully integrated; for instance, the mention of the bed seems slightly disconnected from the key arrangements, but this is a minor point. Overall, you have successfully fulfilled the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the information easily. You have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'This is because', which help to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal/semi-formal letter. The flow is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, demonstrating a good level of control.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of the letter. Phrases like 'accessing the premises', 'easily accessible', and 'numerous activities' show a solid command of language. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to move towards a higher band. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task and conveys your message with precision and clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with a high degree of accuracy. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and verb tenses is strong. For example, the use of the future tense for plans ('will be back', 'will definitely enjoy') is handled correctly. There are very few grammatical slips, and the ones present do not interfere with the reader's understanding. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate even greater flexibility.
