IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well. I am delighted to hear you will be visiting to see me. Unfortunately, I have work on Monday morning but I will be joining you in the evening when I return from work.

I have made all the arrangments prior to your arival. You can find the keys to the house under the right flowerpot on the porch. I have also prepared your room, which will be upstairs to your right and I have arranged all the essential you will need for your stay.

I have also booked you a taxi in advance, the driver will be there to pick you up from the train station. His mobile no. [redacted phone] and drives a white Mazda. He knows the address for my house, but for the heads up it will be the last corner house on the Baker street i.e 211 Baker street.

I do apologize, as I wont be there to welcome you but I will be back around 6:00 PM. I was thinking we could go out for dinner as there is a spectuclar restaurant near my house which has international cuisine.

Hope to see you soon. Would love to catch up with our old conversations.

Kind regards,

Mavi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific instructions for the taxi, and suggested a plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have met all the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the visit, which makes the information easy to follow. You use appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices like 'I have also' and 'Unfortunately' to link your thoughts. While the flow is natural, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat standard; incorporating a wider variety of linking words or more sophisticated transitions could elevate the coherence further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'delighted', 'essential', and 'spectacular' appropriately. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'arrangments', 'arival', and 'spectuclar', which slightly detract from the overall quality. Additionally, 'for the heads up' is a slightly informal or awkward phrasing in this context. Improving spelling accuracy and refining collocations would help you reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, though there are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I have arranged all the essential you will need' (should be 'essentials') and 'I wont be there' (missing apostrophe). The punctuation is generally good, but ensure you check for small errors like missing articles or pluralization. Overall, your control of grammar is strong enough to communicate your message clearly without any confusion.
