IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Krunal,
How is your packing coming along? I heard that you have finally decided to visit Surat, my city.
I’m writing to inform you that I won’t be home in the morning to welcome you personally. However, I have arranged for a city taxi to pick you up at Surat Railway Station, and I have already reserved a room for you with all the necessary amenities.
When you arrive, just look for the deck 1 cab waiting area. Since your train is scheduled to arrive at 8:30 am, the cab with the number GJ05AF1111 (a white Maruti Suzuki Swift) will be waiting for you.
In the evening, once I return home, we’ll have plenty of time to discuss our plans. Many leisure activities have recently opened in the city, and we can also go golfing, as I know you enjoy it during the summer.
For your convenience, I’ve attached a screenshot of the taxi booking reference number.
I’m really looking forward to having a great time together, Krunal. See you soon in the evening.
Until then, take care.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You explained the arrangements for the keys (by mentioning a taxi and a reserved room, though you did not explicitly mention how the relative gets the house keys, which is a minor omission), provided clear instructions for the train station to the house, and stated your arrival time and a suggestion for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, ensure that every part of the prompt is addressed with equal detail; for instance, clarifying how the relative will access the house specifically would have strengthened the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the visit, which makes the information easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'When you arrive,' and 'In the evening' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal/semi-formal letter. The flow between the arrival instructions and the evening plans is smooth and natural. The use of referencing is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context of the letter. Phrases like 'necessary amenities,' 'leisure activities,' and 'scheduled to arrive' show a good level of control. The vocabulary is natural and fits the semi-formal tone well. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication. To move into the higher bands, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to add variety to your writing, though the current range is sufficient for a Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'Since your train is scheduled to arrive at 8:30 am, the cab... will be waiting for you' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are very few errors, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which indicates a strong command of English grammar. You maintain consistent verb tenses, and the overall structure of the letter is grammatically sound.
