Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Brother,

I am writing this letter to inform you that i am excited to meet you today but i will not be at the house when you are arriving, i am outside as my friend had an accident yesterday.

I already did the arrangements for you. first of all I will give the house keys to our neighbor their house number is 10. I will make refreshment for you so that you can relax. Moreover i will clean the our house's guest room so that you can take a rest Also, I already booked the taxi for you so driver will pick you up from the station and drop you to the house.

I will be at home in the afternoon but in the evening we will definitely go to visit the city and will eat good food.

If you need any help, Please call me anytime I will be available on phone for any urgency.

Hope to see you soon,

Bhagyesh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: key arrangements, directions from the station, and evening plans. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of the taxi booking is brief, and the evening plans are mentioned in a very general way. While the tone is appropriate for a letter to a brother, the content could be more detailed to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 or higher. The information is relevant, but the lack of elaboration on the 'arrangements' and 'directions' keeps this at a Band 6 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'first of all' and 'moreover' are used, but the transitions between sentences could be smoother. There are also some issues with punctuation, such as comma splices in the first paragraph ('...arriving, i am outside...'), which disrupt the flow of ideas. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring sentences are correctly punctuated would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. The student uses basic terms like 'make refreshment' (which is non-standard collocation) and 'clean the our house's guest room'. While the meaning is clear, the range is limited to common, everyday language. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate more natural collocations and a wider range of vocabulary related to travel and hospitality. There are minor errors in word choice, such as 'did the arrangements' instead of 'made the arrangements'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include capitalization ('i' instead of 'I'), subject-verb agreement ('driver will pick you up'), and punctuation errors like comma splices. The sentence 'I will make refreshment for you' is grammatically awkward. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to indicate a lack of control over more complex structures. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for capitalization and punctuation would lead to immediate improvement.
