IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mark,

I heard that you are coming here on this Saturday to stay with me, and your train will be arriving in the morning. I am delighted to hear that, however I won't be able to pick you up from the station as I have a crucial meeting on that day, which will be done at 6 PM.

I have made an arrangement for keys and get into the house. Actually, I will leave keys with my friend who lives next door. Additionally, I have booked an Uber for you already, so when you will walk out from the main exit of the station, there will be a taxi parking on the right corner. Shortly, I will provide you all the details regarding Driver's name and Taxi number.

After finishing meeting, I will arrive at home within couple of minutes. Thereafter, we could visit museum located near my house as you are interested in gaining knowledge about the history of Ahmedabad city. After that we could have dinner at a well-known restaurant in that museum that serves authentic and traditional food of Gujarat state. I look forward to hearing from you.

Take Care,

Jack.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained the key arrangement with your neighbor, provided instructions for the taxi, and specified your arrival time along with a suggestion for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail in your suggestions to fully develop the ideas, such as mentioning why the museum is particularly interesting or adding a specific time for dinner to make the plan feel more concrete.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally', 'After finishing', and 'Thereafter' to link your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the taxi instructions and the arrival time could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics, which helps the reader follow your message easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'crucial meeting', 'authentic and traditional food', and 'gaining knowledge' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with collocation and articles, such as 'visit museum' (should be 'visit the museum') and 'taxi parking' (should be 'taxi parked'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating a few more precise or idiomatic expressions would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'when you will walk out' should be 'when you walk out', and 'arrive at home' is better as 'arrive home'. There are also missing articles throughout the text (e.g., 'leave keys' should be 'leave the keys'). Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
