Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Manjot,
I hope you are doing well. I am extremely excited for your visit with us. I am sorry that I won't be home when you arrive in the morning.
However, I have made necessary arrangements so that you can easily get into the house. I'll leave a spare key of my house with my neighbor, Mr. Sharma, who live in the apartment next door. Just tell your name to him, and he will give you the key.
When you will reach the train station, take the number 5 bus, which reach to our area. This bus comes at train station every 15 minutes, so it will be convenient for you to take this bus, and you need to drop off at the last stop. Then there is 2 minutes' walk to my house no.6.
I should be home by around 6.30 p.m. After you have settled in and had some rest, we could have dinner together at a nice restaurant nearby. If you are not tired, we could also take an evening walk around the neighborhood and catch up properly.
I can't wait to see you!
Best wishes,
Harmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement with your neighbor, provided specific instructions for the bus route from the station, and proposed a concrete plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use appropriate transition words such as 'However' and 'After you have settled in' to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the arrival logistics to the evening plans. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct topics, and the use of referencing (e.g., 'this bus', 'the key') is clear and consistent, ensuring the text is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using natural phrases like 'settled in', 'catch up properly', and 'convenient for you'. While the vocabulary is generally functional and accurate, it is mostly standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or descriptive language to enhance the tone. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the language used is well-suited to the informal context of a letter to a relative.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. However, there are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'Mr. Sharma, who live' (should be 'lives') and 'When you will reach' (should be 'When you reach'). Additionally, 'which reach to our area' is slightly awkward; 'which goes to our area' or 'which reaches our area' would be more natural. Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the majority of your sentences are accurate, showing good control over basic and intermediate structures.
