Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Erica,
I am writing this letter in response to let you know that I'm very happy that you are coming to stay with me. But, I want to get information about your arrival date. I have one emergency at my workplace therefore, I'll join you in the evening. instead of morning.
Firstly, I know that you are familiar with my neighbors therefore, I hand over my house keys to them. To enter into the house, first you have to keep keys on the door and apply password to it that I have already texted you last night.
Secondly, to reach at my home I have booked taxi that will drop you directly to the main gate of the apartment.
Lastly, since you are in my city, I will treat you with the best dinner I have ever planned for someone. Don't worry I'll joined you in the evening as early as possible. Apart from having grand dinner, we will be watching our favorite movie followed by long drive.
Please only for this time you understand me. Thanking you for your attention .Waiting for you my darling.
Best wishes,
Jhanvi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions from the station, and suggesting evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of the key arrangement is slightly confusing ('keep keys on the door and apply password'), and the directions are vague, as you simply state you booked a taxi without explaining how the relative gets from the station to the taxi or the house. To improve, provide more specific, logical details to ensure the reader fully understands the instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure of your message. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to signal the progression of your points. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For instance, the opening paragraph jumps between welcoming the guest and discussing a workplace emergency without a smooth transition. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the instruction regarding the keys. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'familiar', 'emergency', and 'apartment'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'hand over my house keys' (should be 'have handed over'), 'keep keys on the door' (should be 'leave the keys'), and 'apply password' (should be 'enter the code'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Expanding your range to include more natural collocations would help you achieve a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I'll joined you' (should be 'I'll join'), 'I have booked taxi' (missing article 'a'), and 'Please only for this time you understand me' (awkward phrasing). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct tense usage (specifically with modal verbs), and the proper use of articles. Proofreading for these common slips will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
