IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Raman,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you about our unablebility to pick you up and to give you welcome gesture.

Although we all are so happy and excited to see you soon, unfortunatly at the time of your arrival we can not able to pick up you from railway station. Thus, to make easier for you to find keys and get into the house we will make some arrangements like the keys hide below carpet of front door so you do not have to stand outside of house .

Secondly, as you know around the railway station services of buses and taxis are very

convenient ,so you can came through that from station to our house. Moreover, we will be arrived home at 6.30 pm and after that we decided to do some fun activities in the evening for example, playing video games, watching movies and many more. Finally, I am really excited to spend time with you and waiting to meet you soon.

yours lovely,

Jaskaran Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions from the station, and suggesting evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of the key arrangement is a bit vague, and the directions from the station are quite generic. To reach a higher band, try to provide more specific details, such as the name of a bus route or a more descriptive plan for the evening, to fully develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your message. You use some cohesive devices like 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'Finally' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel a bit forced. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the progression of ideas feels more natural rather than just following a list of requirements.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'convenient', 'arrangements', and 'excited'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'unablebility' (inability), 'unfortunatly' (unfortunately), and 'welcome gesture'. Additionally, phrases like 'we will be arrived' are grammatically incorrect and impact the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensure you are using the correct word forms in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors that occasionally hinder the flow of the text. Examples include 'we can not able to pick up you' (we will not be able to pick you up), 'keys hide below' (keys hidden below), and 'you can came' (you can come). These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the letter. While the meaning remains clear, the lack of control over basic verb tenses and sentence construction prevents a higher score in this category.
