IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sam,

I am really excited to hear that you will be coming to my home this long weekend and going to spend some days with me and my family. Unfortunately, nobody will be there at the house on the day you arrive. We will be home only by 6pm that night as we have a birthday celebration of our best friend's daughter.

However, you don't have to worry about anything. I have made all arrangements for your travel from the railway station to my home. I already booked a taxi for you and paid them too. I will send you the details along with a QR code. You can just board any taxi outside the railway station and just scan the QR code. Furthermore, I can give the keys for the front door to the neighbor aunty and inform about your arrival.

Its been a while, we haven't met together in the last two years. I have some plans for the evening. I remember you enjoyed going for swimming. So I already booked slot for the pool nearby. It will be so much fun for both of us. I am eagerly waiting to see you.

Regards,

Joe

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for the taxi, and suggested an evening activity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the instructions for the keys are more precise; for instance, specifying which neighbor or how the hand-off will occur would add more clarity. Overall, the task is fully covered with a consistent and friendly tone throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'So' to link your sentences. While the flow is generally good, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. For example, the jump between the taxi instructions and the key arrangements could be smoother. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics, contributing to a coherent structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a personal letter, such as 'arrangements', 'eagerly waiting', and 'celebration'. The language is natural and conveys your message clearly. There are a few minor issues with word choice, such as 'neighbor aunty' (which is informal and culturally specific) and 'booked slot' (which requires an article, e.g., 'a slot'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid slightly repetitive phrasing. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas effectively without any confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips. For instance, 'Its been a while, we haven't met' is a comma splice, and 'booked slot for the pool' is missing an article. Additionally, 'booked a taxi for you and paid them too' is slightly awkward; 'paid for it' would be more accurate. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is generally functional. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor errors would help improve this score.
