A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Chris,
Hope you are doing well. I am really excited and can't wait to meet you after so long.
Unfortunately, I have a meeting in the morning and won't be able to pick you up from the train station. I live really close to the station and it won't be so hard for you to reach my place. You can take public transport from the east side of the station. If you have heavy luggage, I recommend you to book a taxi from the station's taxi counter or just get a uber.
You don't need to worry about the keys. As I have a digital lock, I can open the door for you from my phone whenever you arrive. For lunch, I have already brought your favorite drink and pasta and put them in the fridge.
I will be there around 4pm in the evening after that we will go to sports bar to enjoy some drinks while watching the soccer game. If we have time, we will go to the city center for some shopping.
I can't wait to spend with you, like we used to do before.
Best regards,
David

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the digital lock arrangement, provided directions from the station, and specified your arrival time along with a plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail in the directions, such as mentioning a landmark or a specific bus route, to further demonstrate your ability to elaborate on task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'If', and 'As' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is clear and easy to follow. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to make the flow between sentences feel more sophisticated and less mechanical, which would help in achieving a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'digital lock', 'public transport', and 'heavy luggage' correctly. The language is natural and appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'get a uber' (should be 'get an Uber') and 'brought your favorite drink' (where 'prepared' or 'stocked' might be more precise). To improve, try to incorporate more varied and less common collocations to demonstrate a broader lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'If you have heavy luggage...' and the complex sentence 'As I have a digital lock, I can open the door...'. While most of your sentences are clear, there are a few minor errors, such as 'after that we will go to sports bar' (missing an article: 'a sports bar') and 'I can't wait to spend with you' (missing an object: 'spend time with you'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent a higher score.
