IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Suman,

I hope you are doing well. I am very happy to hear that you are coming to my home after two days. I felt sad when I got to know that you are coming in the morning time because at that time I will be in office.

Actually, first I was thinking to take off from my work but recently I get promotion. Due to this, its my probation period and I could not have day off once work schedule out. I have to inform my HR atleast 7 days before.

You don't have to worry about at all because I make all the arrangements for you. My cousin will pick up you from railway station at exact time of train arrival. He will drop you at home and handout keys to you. You can take rest for some time and will have meal that I will be prepare for you. After some time around 3 o'clock , I will be come back then we will talk to each other and spend quality time together.

See you soon,

Best regards,

Karanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for the relative to get from the station, and stated when you would be home while suggesting an evening activity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven; for instance, the explanation regarding your work schedule is quite detailed, whereas the suggestion for the evening activity is somewhat vague. To improve, ensure that each bullet point is given balanced attention and that the information provided is clear and directly relevant to the reader's needs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the greeting to the explanation of your absence, the arrangements, and finally the plan for the evening. Paragraphing is present, though the transition between the work explanation and the arrival arrangements could be smoother. You use some cohesive devices like 'Actually' and 'Due to this', but some of these feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow of the middle paragraph is a bit disjointed due to the shift from discussing your work to the cousin's arrival. Improving the use of linking words would help the ideas connect more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'probation period', 'arrangements', and 'quality time'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'take off from my work' (should be 'take time off'), 'handout keys' (should be 'hand over the keys'), and 'I will be come back' (grammatically incorrect). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common English collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural phrases for everyday situations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. Examples include 'I got to know that you are coming' (should be 'I heard that you were coming'), 'I make all the arrangements' (should be 'I have made'), and 'I will be prepare' (should be 'I will prepare'). Additionally, there are issues with verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic tense consistency and sentence construction will lead to significant improvement.
