IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Romi,

I am really excited that you are coming to stay with me next week. Unfortunately, i would not be at home when you arrive in the morning because i have to work, but i have made an arrangement for you so that you can get into the house without any trouble.

I have left the spare key with my neighbor, Sarah, who lives right next door. When you arrive just simply ring her doorbell and tell her that you are my cousin. She will give you the key. I have also prepare the guest room for you, so feel free and relax and make yourself at home.

Getting to my house from the station is quite easy. Take bus number 56 Oakville go from the station and platform number 7 and get off at Square one. From there, walk straight to the right side of crossing line to grocery store. If you have a lot of luggage, i would suggest take a taxi instead.

I should home around 5.30 pm. Once i arrive, we could go out for dinner at our favourite restaurant and then watch a movie at home. It would be great to spend time with you and recall our all memorable moments again.

Have a safe journey, I cannot wait to see you.

Kind regards,

Sheery

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement with your neighbor, provided specific instructions for the bus route, and stated your arrival time while suggesting evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all instructions are perfectly clear; for example, the bus directions are slightly confusing regarding the platform and the specific stop, but the overall message remains understandable and the task is fully satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'When you arrive', and 'Once i arrive' to link your sentences. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that transitions between sentences feel more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal or semi-formal letter, contributing to the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use phrases like 'make yourself at home', 'safe journey', and 'memorable moments' effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'prepare' instead of 'prepared' and 'crossing line' which is slightly unnatural. While you have enough vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly, the range is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items that sound more natural in a native-speaker context, while ensuring grammatical accuracy in your word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully communicate your ideas, there are several recurring grammatical errors. For example, you frequently fail to capitalize the pronoun 'I', and there are tense errors such as 'i would not be' instead of 'I will not be' and 'i would suggest take' instead of 'I would suggest taking'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article omissions. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
