IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sahil,
I hope you and Seema both are doing well. I am writing to let you know that I won’t be available in the morning to pick you up from the train station.
Since I have scheduled a meeting in the early morning with clients at wabigoon community, I won’t be in the town till the evening. To be honest, you won’t need a key to enter the house because there will be someone in the house to open the door for you. However, I have hidden one key inside my summer tires which are right beside the entrance door if no one showed up to open the door.
While Sioux Lookout train station is near to my house, I have asked my friend who doesn’t have morning shifts to pick you up on my behalf. Since it is a walkable distance from the train station, it will take 15mins to walk to my house only if, in case, my friend doesn’t show up at the station.
Since I will be with my clients outside the town, you will get a chance to relax and take some rest from your long journey. After my work is done in the evening, I will take you to a show around the town and we will also go to do some fishing because it is a popular activity in this town.
I hope you will understand my situation. I look forward to seeing you ready in the evening for fishing.
Yours Only,
Manpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided directions from the station, and specified your arrival time along with a suggestion for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task. You have successfully maintained a consistent, friendly, and informative tone throughout the letter, ensuring the reader understands the logistics of their arrival. No parts of the task were omitted, and the information provided is clear and logical.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'However', and 'While' to link your sentences and ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal/semi-formal letter. The transition between the logistical details and the evening plans is smooth. Overall, the structure is coherent and the flow of information is natural, making the letter easy to read and understand.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'scheduled a meeting', 'walkable distance', and 'popular activity' are used accurately. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'show a show around the town' (which should be 'show you around') and 'ready in the evening for fishing'. While these do not impede communication, they slightly limit the precision of your expression. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic expressions or precise collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I won’t be in the town' (should be 'in town') and 'if no one showed up' (should be 'shows up' to maintain tense consistency). Additionally, 'Yours Only' is an unusual closing; 'Best regards' or 'Love' would be more natural. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your control over grammar is strong, and the errors do not interfere with the reader's understanding of the message.
