IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hi dear,

I hope you are doing well. I am waiting for you to come and stay with me. Are you done your packaging for the travel? Do not worry about the new place, I arranged everything for you. There is one thing that I need to inform you. As per your update, you will reach here by morning 8 a.m., but I am unable to pick up you from the railway station. I have an important meeting with a client at 8.30 a.m. and reach home by evening 4 p.m.. It is an unavoidable meeting that is why I am going.

However, I arranged everything in your room. I cleaned your room and bought bed, chair, table and lights. If you need anything additional, we can buy it from nearest store. Also, I made an extra key for you use.

One of my friend will come to pick up you from station. You can call him when you reach at the station. It only taking 30 minutes drive from the station to my house and he will take of your luggage as well. Home key is also with him and you can take that.

I will reach home as soon as possible after the meeting. I know that you become tired after the long travel and difficult to cook. Therefore, we can go to a restaurent near the beach and have food from there. Also we can spend some time at the beach.

Thank you for understanding me. I am looking forward to see you and spend time together. Happy journey...

With love,

Thomas

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for the relative to get from the station, and suggested a plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the plan. There is a clear sense of purpose throughout the letter, and all requirements of the task are met in a helpful and friendly manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the visit. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Therefore', to link your thoughts. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical, and some transitions could be smoother. For instance, the jump between discussing the room and the friend picking them up could be better connected. Overall, the structure is coherent, and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics requested in the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some natural expressions like 'unavoidable meeting' and 'looking forward to'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Are you done your packaging' (should be 'Have you finished packing') and 'take of your luggage' (should be 'take care of'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of collocations would improve the naturalness of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am unable to pick up you' (should be 'pick you up'), 'It only taking 30 minutes' (should be 'It only takes'), and 'I am looking forward to see you' (should be 'looking forward to seeing you'). These errors are frequent but do not cause significant confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on verb patterns, word order in phrasal verbs, and subject-verb agreement.
