explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Priya,
I hope you are doing well. I am so excited to meet you next Monday after such a long time at my place in Ahmedabad.
Unfortunately, I will have to attend meeting at my office in the morning because of that I am unable to pick you up from the Kalupur Railway station. But you do not have to worry about anything, I have a second plan. My neighbor will hand over the keys to you for my apartment.
Most importantly, when you get off from the train just take direct public transportation to the main city hall, which is last stop for the bus. My home is just front of that, so you will not have any difficulties to find it.
I have made plans in the evening after coming home around 5 pm. We will go for a movie night and dinner in downtown restaurant . I want to make this stay memorable for you.
Take care and have a safe journey. See You Soon!
Your sincerely,
Alexa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement with your neighbor, provided specific instructions for the bus route from the station, and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, ensure that your instructions are slightly more precise; for example, mentioning the name of the bus or a specific landmark would make the directions more helpful. Overall, the task is fully covered with a clear and consistent purpose throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'Most importantly', and 'But' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'that' in 'because of that') is used more precisely to avoid ambiguity. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'memorable', 'difficulties', and 'public transportation'. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'attend meeting' (should be 'attend a meeting') and 'in downtown restaurant' (should be 'at a downtown restaurant'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it remains somewhat basic. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more natural collocations and less common lexical items that fit the context of travel and social arrangements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I will have to attend meeting' (missing article), 'because of that I am unable' (punctuation/conjunction error), and 'just front of that' (missing preposition 'in'). Additionally, 'Your sincerely' is an incorrect closing for a letter to a family member; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best regards' would be more appropriate. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into a higher band.
