IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Amar

I hope you are doing well. I am so glad to hear that you are coming next weekend to visit my place. As due to my work schedule I would not be able to pick you from train station and I know you are coming to my hometown for the first time.

Actually I already planned for you how to reach my home so it would be easy for you to come. At first, you need to book an uber from train station which will take 20 minutes to come at my home address and I will leave house keys in the mailbox. After, you can fresh up and have some foods as I will prepare it before hand for your convenience.

As you know my working hours, so I will be back around 4 PM and then we will go to downtown as you told me that you want to go there also we will have a dinner together and then you rest so that we can enjoy rest of the days.

Yours sincerely,

Robanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained the key arrangement (mailbox), provided instructions for the train station to your home, and specified your arrival time along with a suggestion for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for example, you could provide more specific details about the downtown area or the type of food you plan to prepare. Overall, the response is relevant and fully satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Actually', 'At first', and 'After' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between the arrival instructions and the food preparation is slightly abrupt. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing (e.g., 'it' in 'prepare it') clearly points to the intended noun. Paragraphing is present and appropriate for a letter format.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully communicating your message. You use some natural phrases like 'work schedule' and 'convenience'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'fresh up' (should be 'freshen up') and 'have some foods' (should be 'have some food'). Additionally, 'pick you from' should be 'pick you up from'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate that your lexical range is sufficient but lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, 'As due to my work schedule' is redundant; it should be 'Due to my work schedule' or 'As I have a busy work schedule'. There are also minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'at train station' (should be 'at the train station') and 'leave house keys' (should be 'leave the house keys'). The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of these small errors prevents a higher score.
