IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jhalak,
I'm really excited that you're coming to my house this Saturday. Unfortunately, I won't be able to pick you from the train station in the morning. I am working in another town and will be back by evening.
I have set up my guest bedroom, you will be tired from your journey so I suggest some rest. Also, the keys of the house are under the second pot to the right of the main door. You can use the kitchen anytime.
To get to my house, take a taxi to 71 Queen Street. The views to my house are great, you will pass a bridge that gives a view of Toronto's skyline. You will also pass through a museum which means you are a minute away from home.
Until I come back, I hope you get sufficient rest. I have my PlayStation set up that has the latest Assassin's Creed game. You should definitely give it a try. For evening, should we go out for clubbing? Or if you're not feeling it then we can order some pizza at home and chill.
I hope you enjoy your stay. Have a safe journey.
Yours faithfully,
Kashish

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific directions from the station, and proposed a plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the ideas are well-developed. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the 'arrangements' for the keys, such as mentioning who else might be there or if there is a backup plan, but overall, the task is fully covered.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use clear paragraph breaks to separate the logistics from the social plans. While the flow is generally good, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic (e.g., 'Also', 'To get to', 'Until I come back'). Incorporating a wider variety of linking words or phrases would improve the flow and make the transitions between sentences feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'sufficient rest' and 'latest Assassin's Creed game'. However, some word choices are slightly repetitive or could be more precise. For example, 'The views to my house are great' is a bit unnatural; 'The route to my house is quite scenic' would be more idiomatic. You have sufficient vocabulary to convey your message clearly, but there is room to incorporate more sophisticated collocations to move into the higher band range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'pick you from the train station' (should be 'pick you up') and 'keys of the house' (more naturally 'house keys'). Additionally, there is a comma splice in 'I have set up my guest bedroom, you will be tired...', which should be two separate sentences or joined with a semicolon. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication.
