IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hi Sarah,

Hope you are doing good. How's your family doing? I know you are coming next week to stay with us, but unfortunately, on that day I won't be home until the evening.

I understand you will be arriving by train in the morning, and it is hard to get a bus at that time. So, I had booked a taxi which will safely drop you at our home. I will leave the side door keys inside the flower pot, so you can get into the house and get some relax until we come back. If you are starving, you can cook food or buy through Uber.

I will come back around 6pm in the evening and we can go out together. There is a new restaurant has opened, we will have dinner from there. Later, we can go for a movie. I hope you will enjoy it.

Let me know if I have to do anything else.

See you here. B

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for the taxi, and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all instructions are fully detailed; for instance, you could have provided a specific landmark or street name for the taxi driver to make the directions more practical and realistic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the arrival arrangements to the evening plans. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'So', 'If', and 'Later' to connect your thoughts. However, the paragraphing is slightly inconsistent, and the transition between the arrival arrangements and the evening plans could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, which would make the overall structure feel more cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'starving' and 'unfortunately' appropriately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and basic. There are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'get some relax' (should be 'get some rest' or 'relax') and 'buy through Uber' (should be 'order through Uber'). To achieve a higher band, aim to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items that sound more natural in a native-speaker context, rather than relying on simple, everyday phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'There is a new restaurant has opened' (should be 'A new restaurant has opened' or 'There is a new restaurant that has opened') and 'I had booked' (should be 'I have booked' as the action is in the future). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on ensuring consistent verb tense usage and correct relative clause construction to improve your accuracy.
