A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Swati,
Hope this letter finds you well. I have heard the news that you are coming for a short staycation at my place and since that day I could not control my excitement to meet you after ages.
As you will be arriving early morning, I will not be available by that time because I leave for my work around 4am. I will keep the keys for the main door in the locker box that is near the mail box. To access it, enter the password 7871 and press enter that will open the box and you will get access to keys.
Furthermore, arriving at my house is quite confusing as there are very few public transports available in early morning. I can book a cab for your scheduled time that will help you to reach my place very easily.
Lastly, I will be home in the evening by 6:30 pm and then will have the fun time together. I have decided to take you to amazing 5 star restaurant to have delicious dinner and spend some quality time doing gossips.
I look forward to welcome you and have a great time together by cherishing old memories.
Yours lovingly,
Binn

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement using a locker box, provided a logical solution for transport from the train station, and specified your arrival time along with a suggestion for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a relative, maintaining a friendly and personal style throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the information provided is sufficient to satisfy the reader's needs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the information easily. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Lastly' to link your points. The opening and closing salutations are appropriate for the informal context. The flow of the letter is logical, and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics, ensuring the message is coherent and easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an informal letter, such as 'staycation', 'cherishing', and 'scheduled time'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there are minor collocation issues, such as 'doing gossips' (which should be 'having a gossip' or 'chatting') and 'look forward to welcome you' (which should be 'look forward to welcoming you'). Despite these minor slips, the range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are a few minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I will not be available by that time' (should be 'at that time') and 'take you to amazing 5 star restaurant' (missing an article: 'an amazing 5-star restaurant'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong for this level.
