IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

I hope you're doing well. It's been a while since we last spoke and I'm glad that you wrote back. I'm writing to let you know that, I'm elated to host you in my house. However, I'm unable to receive you from the station because I will be in the training until the evening, but I already made some arrangements for you.

To begin with, I'll give the spare keys to my neighbors, who live next to us on the right. Please feel free to collect it from them. In addition to that, I'll prepare the breakfast and keep it on the dining table. Make sure you heat it before having it. More importantly, please feel comfortable and ping me if you need anything.

Secondly, I would advise that you book a cab instead of relying on the public transport because it is effective and reliable. To book a cab you have to exit the platform by taking the ride share exit which is on the left side exactly beside the restrooms.

Finally, my training supposed to end by 4:30 pm and I'll be home by 5 pm. Sometimes, It may extend until 5 but lets hope for the best. Afterwards, we can go out for a dinner and catch up with our buddies to have a chat.

I hope it sounds like a plan and Let me know your thoughts.

Best regards,

Raj kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific directions from the station, and stated your arrival time while suggesting an evening activity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all instructions are fully integrated; for example, the detail about breakfast is helpful but could be more concisely linked to the primary task of arrival arrangements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing that separates the different requirements of the task. You use transition signals such as 'To begin with', 'In addition to that', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the information. While these markers are effective, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive devices rather than relying heavily on sequential numbering. The referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow from the arrival logistics to the evening plans.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'elated to host you' and 'relying on the public transport' are natural and appropriate. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'in the training' (should be 'at training') and 'collect it' (referring to 'keys', which is plural). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to travel and hospitality to elevate the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'my training supposed to end' (missing 'is') and 'Sometimes, It may extend' (capitalization error). Additionally, 'lets hope' requires an apostrophe ('let's'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. The punctuation is generally functional, though attention to detail regarding verb forms and subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
