IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rashmi,

I am so glad after hearing the news that you are visiting me on this weekend, as you are coming to visit me for the first time, I should have spare some time to receive you from the station. However, I have some important business to do this Saturday so I won't be able to receive you.

Although, this is your first time to visit this city but you can find my home so easily. I have left a spare key under the pink flower pot next to the main door. Likewise, I have pree booked a cab for you. The cab license plate is #[redacted phone] and will pick you at 2:00 p.m. from the railway station.

I will make sure to make it home by 7:00 p.m. and we will go for a dinner at a nearby restaraunt. Moreover, I have some suggestions for new movies that we can watch after having dinner. There are some more plans that I have made for us for the next day, that I will share with you after reaching home.

I am eagerly waiting for you! Please come home safe.

Regards,

Gurmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific instructions regarding the cab for the relative, and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all instructions are followed with complete accuracy; for instance, the prompt asked how to get from the station to the house, and while you provided a cab, adding a brief mention of the travel time or route would have added further depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the visit, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Although', and 'Moreover' to link your sentences effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal or semi-formal letter. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences feel more natural; for example, the opening of the second paragraph 'Although, this is your first time to visit this city but...' contains a redundant 'but' after 'Although', which slightly disrupts the flow of the sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'pre-booked a cab' and 'eagerly waiting'. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'restaraunt' (restaurant) and 'pree booked' (pre-booked), and some minor collocation issues, such as 'spare some time' instead of 'set aside some time'. However, these errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary to describe your arrangements and feelings, moving beyond basic descriptive terms to more sophisticated expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I am so glad after hearing' (should be 'to hear') and 'you are visiting me on this weekend' (remove 'on'). Additionally, 'I should have spare some time' should be 'I should have spared some time'. While these errors are present, they are non-systematic and do not cause confusion for the reader. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor tense consistency would help improve your score.
