IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Hasna,

How's everything? I hope you're doing well. It's been an ages to contact you. I'm writing this letter to tell you that I'm so sorry I could't pick you up in train station and would not likely to comeback home until evening since I am still having a class and a group meeting assignment untill 6 pm.

I have made an arrangement, so you can easily get into my house. For your information, I have duplicated my keys and saved my spare key under the flower pot on the left side of my backyard. Thus, you can get it from the bottom of the pot.

Since you are new in Melbourne and you're arriving in Flinder station, you can commute to my house with tram number 59. Afterwards, you can stop at the Mooltan street which is number 24 stop station. Don't forget to tap on your myki card and press the red stop button before you arrive in that station.

I will be home before 8 pm and we can have a dinner outside near my neighbourhood. There's a delicious fine dining restaurant which serves korean dishes with affordable prices. I believe you will like it so much since you're into the mushroom jjiggae soup.

I'm looking forward to meet up with you.

With love,

Wismar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific directions using public transport, and proposed a concrete plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and personal style throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the situation described. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task by providing sufficient detail for each point, ensuring the reader understands the logistics of their arrival and your subsequent meeting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow the information easily. You have used cohesive devices such as 'For your information', 'Thus', and 'Afterwards' to link your sentences and ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be slightly more natural to reach the highest band, but overall, the structure is coherent and easy to navigate.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task, such as 'duplicated', 'commute', and 'fine dining'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'It's been an ages' (should be 'an age') and 'I'm looking forward to meet up' (should be 'meeting up'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to travel and dining, which adds clarity to your message. To improve, focus on common collocations and idiomatic expressions to sound more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'could't pick you up in train station' (should be 'at the train station') and 'would not likely to comeback' (should be 'would not be able to come back'). Additionally, 'untill' is misspelled. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally good, and the meaning is always conveyed clearly to the reader.
