IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Rafi,

I’m really happy to hear that you’re coming to stay with me. I’m sorry that I won’t be home when you arrive, but don’t worry because I’ve made all the necessary arrangements.

I will leave a spare key with my neighbour, Mr Karim, who lives in the apartment next door. When you arrive, just knock on his door and tell him that you are my relative. He will give you the key and show you where my apartment is. You can make yourself comfortable and leave your luggage in the bedroom.

From the train station, the easiest way to get to my house is by taxi. It should take around 15 minutes. Just show the driver my address, which I will send to you by text message before you arrive. Alternatively, you can take the number 5 bus from outside the station and get off at the Central Market.

I should be home by around 6:30 p.m. That evening, we could have dinner at a nearby restaurant and then take a walk around the city.

I’m really looking forward to seeing you!

Best wishes,

Ahbab

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements involving your neighbour, provided two distinct options for transport from the station, and specified your arrival time along with a suggestion for the evening. The tone is consistently appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. All parts of the task are well-developed, and the information provided is practical and easy to follow, meeting all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving naturally from the key arrangements to travel instructions and finally to your evening plans. You use cohesive devices such as 'Alternatively', 'When you arrive', and 'That evening' effectively to link your ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics, making the letter very easy to read and follow. The overall structure is coherent and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for this informal task. Phrases like 'make yourself comfortable', 'necessary arrangements', and 'looking forward to' are used naturally. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message with precision. While the range is adequate for a Band 7, incorporating a few more idiomatic expressions or slightly more sophisticated collocations could elevate the response further. There are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the tone remains consistent throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your use of modal verbs ('should take', 'could have') and conditional structures is accurate. Punctuation is used correctly, and the grammar is generally error-free. The majority of your sentences are well-constructed, and there are no significant grammatical slips that distract the reader. You have shown good control over sentence variety, which makes the writing flow well. The accuracy is high, reflecting a strong command of English grammar.
