IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Brother,

I hope you are doing well. I'm so glad that you are coming to stay with me. It's been so long we haven't meet and i am so excited to see you. I hope everybody is okay at your home. I am writing to inform you that unfortunately, I won't be able to pick you up from the station as I have an very important meeting in the morning and i won't be able to make it till the evening.

However, I have made arrangements for you. I have informed my friend Sarah, She will be there at the station and will drive you till home. I have also kept the residence key inside the empty blue coloured flowerpot. Now talking about your luggage, You dont have to worry about cause Sarah will pick you up in car and you will have more space for the luggage.

Moreover, I will try my best to come early but I cannot promise you. I have plans for us tonight. Maybe, we can go to some nice restaurant and have delicious food, then we can go to do balling or else we can go for a long drive and have fun.

I look forward to see you. I am so excited and happy.

Yours,

Kiya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements involving your friend Sarah, provided instructions regarding the keys in the flowerpot, and suggested activities for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Now talking about', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places, and the paragraphing is slightly inconsistent. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in linking phrases would enhance the overall flow and make the progression of ideas more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'arrangements', 'residence', and 'unfortunately' correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'drive you till home' (should be 'drive you home') and 'go to do balling' (should be 'go bowling'). While you communicate your meaning effectively, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the variety of less common lexical items that would be required for a higher band score. The tone remains consistently appropriate for the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'It's been so long we haven't meet' (should be 'haven't met'), 'an very important meeting' (should be 'a very'), and 'I look forward to see you' (should be 'looking forward to seeing you'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some issues with capitalization and comma usage.
