IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mom,

I'm truly happy to know that you're coming to me for few days. Unfortunately I'ld be at my work at the time but don't worry my friend will pick you from the railway station when you arrives.

I have made all the arrangements as Jashan, my friend who lives with me in another room will receive you because he'll at home that time.

Don't forget to get keys from him for my room. I'll prepare breakfast for you before leaving for job also will store some snacks in kitchen incase you feel hungry. I believe you won't be bore in my absence as I setup a TV in my room.

I already tell everything to Jashan, I will share you his photo that helps you to recognise him in the crowd at the station. Therefore, I gave him your contact number he will call you to find you. He will pick you up from station and then drop you at my home.

I will be at home around 6pm, I planned a dinner with you in a famous restaurant of the city. There is a fireworks show at 9pm, I'll be happy to bring you there. Needless to day, gossiping late night is important thing we'll definitely do.

Hope you'll arrive safely.

Can't wait to see you mom.

Yours lovingly,

Parm

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response effectively addresses the task by explaining the arrangements for the family member's arrival, including the role of Jashan. However, details on how to get from the train station to the house are not clearly stated. The closing remarks about plans for dinner and the fireworks show contribute positively to the overall message. To improve, the writer should ensure that every aspect of the task is fully covered, particularly the route from the train station.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a generally good flow, with clear paragraphs indicating distinct ideas. However, there are moments of awkward phrasing ('I believe you won't be bore in my absence') that disrupt coherence. Additionally, the use of transitional words could be enhanced to improve smoothness between ideas. More attention to logical connections, like explaining how Jashan knows the family member’s arrival time, would strengthen coherence further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a reasonable lexical resource, using words like 'arrangements' and phrases such as 'gossiping late night.' However, there are some weaknesses in word choice and spelling, such as 'I'ld' (should be 'I'd') and 'bore' (should be 'bored'). There are also informal phrases like 'few days' that may be too casual in this context. Expanding vocabulary variety will help the response to meet higher band descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

Grammatical accuracy is somewhat inconsistent; errors include subject-verb agreement ('you arrives'), pronoun misuse ('it’ rather than 'that'), and incorrect verb forms ('I already tell'). These issues may hinder clarity and professionalism in the letter. Some sentences are too short or awkwardly structured, which detracts from fluency. More complex sentences could be introduced to demonstrate a greater grammatical range.

Overall feedback

The response shows strong engagement and an informal tone appropriate for a letter to a family member, which is a clear strength. However, to improve, the writer should focus on addressing all the key task points more thoroughly, especially the directions from the train station to the house. Grammar, punctuation, and sentence structuring should be refined for clarity. Utilizing a wider range of vocabulary choices and ensuring detailed explanations will improve task achievement and coherence significantly in future responses.
