A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mother,

Hope you are doing well! Although, I was very happy before, my happiness converted into disappointment when i came to know that tomorrow I have meeting in Calgory. It's regarding our company. That is why, I am not able to pick up from train station. But do not worry, I discussed with my bosom friend and She has keys of our main door. She is very nice and I hope you will not face any problem during that time.

In order to come home, you have to go her office which is next to train station. It is a black large building. You just have to visit her office and ask her name on reception. Then she must help you.

I would reach home at 2pm then we will go outside near beach where we spend time together. I am assure you will feel relaxed and refreshed. I will bring your favorite food while coming home. At evening we will watch television together.

Best wishes,

Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for finding your friend's office, and suggested evening activities. However, the tone is slightly inconsistent for a letter to a mother, and some details are a bit vague, such as the instruction to 'ask her name on reception' without providing the friend's name. The development of ideas is sufficient to meet the requirements, but could be more natural and detailed to fully satisfy the criteria for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'In order to' and 'Then', which help the flow. However, the transition between the opening and the explanation of the meeting is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disconnected. Improving the variety of linking words would help the text flow more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a range of vocabulary that is adequate for the task, such as 'disappointment', 'refreshed', and 'bosom friend'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'my happiness converted into disappointment' and 'I am assure you'. These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Expanding your range of natural expressions would improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('I have meeting', 'next to train station'), incorrect verb forms ('I am not able to pick up'), and punctuation issues. While these errors are frequent, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent use of articles, and refining your sentence construction to reduce these recurring slips.
