IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Dear Mr John,

I am writing to discuss about your misbehaviour with my neighbour during the party.

I must say that you behaved very impolite with Mrs Smith as she is older than you and deserve respect from all of us. We all were pretty much shocked when you didn't turn down the music even after she asked you couple of times.

I do feel that you should go to Mrs Smith and apologise for your misbehaviour during the1 last night party. You should say sorry to her and try to understand how upset she is due to your bad behaviour.

I hope you'll not doing this kind of behaviour during the time of upcoming neighbour ocassions. Because this is actually important for you to respect the elders and seniors citizens.

I think you will think about it. I would accept kind behaviour towords seniors.

Yours sincerely,

Sumandeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.0

The response is completely off-topic. The task instructions required you to write to a family member about their upcoming visit, including details about house keys, directions from the train station, and evening plans. Instead, you wrote a letter to a 'Mr John' complaining about his behavior at a party. Because you failed to address any of the bullet points provided in the prompt, the task achievement is severely compromised. Additionally, the response is 149 words, failing to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. To improve, you must carefully read the prompt and ensure your content directly answers the specific questions asked in the task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The letter is organized into paragraphs, and there is a basic attempt at logical progression. However, because the content is entirely irrelevant to the prompt, the overall coherence is affected. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'I must say' and 'I do feel', but the transitions between ideas are somewhat mechanical. To improve, focus on ensuring that each paragraph serves the purpose of the task requirements and that your ideas flow naturally from one point to the next in relation to the specific scenario provided.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally simple and repetitive. There are several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'behaved very impolite' (should be 'impolitely') and 'upcoming neighbour ocassions' (should be 'occasions'). You also use 'misbehaviour' repeatedly, which limits the range of your vocabulary. To achieve a higher band score, try to use a wider variety of descriptive language and ensure that your word choices are grammatically appropriate for the context. Focus on learning common collocations to make your writing sound more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'discuss about' (should be 'discuss'), 'deserve respect' (should be 'deserves'), 'I hope you'll not doing' (should be 'I hope you will not do'), and 'towords' (spelling error). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. The errors in verb tense and subject-verb agreement are noticeable and occasionally make the meaning slightly unclear. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures and proofreading for common errors like subject-verb agreement and spelling.
