IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Uncle,

I hope you are doing well.

I received your voicemail notice that you are coming to my home in the morning. I got very excited when I received this message. I am very happy but there was a little problem that occurred. I will be at work in the morning, but I will be there with you in the evening. But despite these small issues, there is a great thing that I have arranged nicely for you, such as home and some food and drinks for you. Apart from this, a very crucial thing is the house keys, I have placed them under the doormat which is outside the door near the doorbell.

On the other side, I have arranged a cab for you. When you get up, there will be a cab outside waiting for you. Also, I am sharing the driver's phone number with you, which is [redacted phone].

When we finally meet in the evening, I promise to have so much fun in the evening and an extremely great outing with you.

Thankyou

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions from the station, and suggesting evening plans. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the instructions for getting from the station to your house are vague; you mention a cab but do not explain how the uncle will find it or where the station is in relation to your home. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, but the content could be more detailed to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 or higher response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Apart from this' and 'On the other side' to transition between ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'On the other side' to introduce the cab arrangement. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural, cohesive narrative throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to convey your message clearly. You use some functional phrases like 'voicemail notice' and 'crucial thing'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple descriptors like 'great thing' or 'small issues'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary to describe your arrangements and feelings. For example, instead of 'great thing', you could use 'convenient arrangement' or 'thoughtful preparation'. The word choice is generally accurate, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I promise to have so much fun in the evening and an extremely great outing with you,' which is slightly awkward in phrasing. You also have some minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'Thankyou' (should be 'Thank you'). Your control of basic grammar is generally good, but you need to increase the variety of complex structures and ensure higher accuracy to move into the 7.0+ range.
