IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mom,

I am writing to let you know that I will not at home until the evening when you are arrived to stay with me.

I already made a good arrangement for you for that day. I just leave my home keys to my neighbourhood named Dipa. Her house number is 435 and she lives beside our house. You can take a key from Dipa.

You arrived at station around 6 o'clock in morning. When you exit from the railway station, you get a bus from Bay 12 which is opposite to the entrance of railway station. This bus drop you near the grocery store. Then, cross the road and there is entrance of our house.

I will be at home around 7 o'clock. I made a plan to see a movie with you and we also go to park, After that, I prepared a dinner for you and we enjoyed together.

Best Wishes

Parneet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions from the station, and suggesting evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the directions are a bit mechanical and could be more natural. Additionally, the tense usage in the final paragraph regarding the evening plans is slightly confusing, as you mix future intentions with past tense verbs (e.g., 'I prepared a dinner'). To improve, ensure that your plans for the future are clearly expressed using appropriate future forms.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Then' and 'After that' to sequence your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally choppy, and the use of referencing is sometimes unclear (e.g., 'I just leave my home keys to my neighbourhood named Dipa'). To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your pronouns and references clearly point back to the intended nouns to improve the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for this task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use functional words like 'arrangement', 'entrance', and 'grocery store'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I just leave my home keys to my neighbourhood' (should be 'neighbor') and 'You arrived at station' (should be 'You will arrive'). To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensure you are using the correct terminology for everyday situations, such as 'neighbor' instead of 'neighbourhood' when referring to a person.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and articles. For instance, 'I will not at home' is missing a verb, and 'when you are arrived' is grammatically incorrect (should be 'when you arrive'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage, such as 'at station' instead of 'at the station'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of your writing.
