IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Dad,

I hope you all are doing well. I am so excited to meet with my lovely family.

I am really sorry that I can not come to pick up you but I have done all adjustments. When you will reach then one of my friend will be there and he will drop you at my home. Then, when you will reach at the flat then ask security guard for keys of flat number 401. Do not worry, he will guide you to go my apartment.

Although, I will be at work but I can pick your call. So when you will drop off from Toronto station then Just call me and I will inform to my friend. His name is Aryan and he will come to carry your all luggage. He will directly leave you in front of my flat.

I want to come home early but I can not. I will be at home at sharp 11:45pm. I have booked a table in the most famous restaurant. It is just on walking distance then we will do dinner over there.

I am eagerly waiting to hug you all and whenever you feel you do not understand anything then feel free to call me.

Warm Regards,

Anju Pal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: key arrangements, directions from the station, and evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the instruction regarding the security guard is clear, but the logistics of the friend meeting your father at the station and then coordinating with you are slightly repetitive and could be more concisely explained. Overall, the message is clear and the purpose of the letter is fully achieved, though some parts could be more naturally phrased to improve the flow of information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although' and 'So', to link ideas. However, the use of transition words is occasionally mechanical, and some sentences feel disjointed. For example, the transition between the arrival instructions and the evening plans could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the repetition of 'when you will reach' makes the progression feel slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words would help the text flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message effectively, such as 'eagerly waiting' and 'adjustments'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'do not come to pick up you' (should be 'pick you up') and 'do dinner' (should be 'have dinner'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common English collocations. You have attempted to use some descriptive language, which is good, but further practice with natural phrasing would elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and word order, such as 'When you will reach' (should be 'When you arrive') and 'I will inform to my friend' (should be 'I will inform my friend'). Additionally, there are issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'at walking distance' (should be 'within walking distance'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on mastering conditional structures and the correct use of prepositions.
