IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear maya

I hope you will have a wonderful travel. I am very excited to see you but unfortunately for some reason I will be home until evening. But you shouldn’t be worried about the key , I am leaving the key next to the mailbox, where you can find a small box in the porch.

I am extremely sorry that I am unable to pick you up from the train station. But no worries there is plenty of transportation available to my house. In my opinion it will be better for you if you take a taxi from the train station, it will save your time and confusion abut the address because the taxi will drop you infront of my gate.

I thank that will be great idea. If you tell the taxi driver my house address he will drop off you right there.

But don’t forget to save my address which I text you yesterday night.

But if you change your mind and and try to get public buses rather then taxi then you might he careful so you don’t missed the stop, I guess if you tell the bus driver about your stop so he might help you to get off on the right stop.

Thank you for coming my dear sister maya

See you soon in the evening

We will have good dinner together.

Lots of love

Your sister

Moon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions from the station, and suggesting an evening activity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the taxi instructions, which occupy a large portion of the letter. To improve, ensure that each point is covered concisely and clearly, allowing more space to elaborate on the evening plans, which were only briefly mentioned at the end. Overall, the message is clear and the purpose of the letter is achieved.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the key arrangements to travel advice and finally to the evening plans. However, the paragraphing is weak; the text is essentially one long block, which makes it harder to read. You rely on basic cohesive devices like 'But' and 'And' to start sentences, which makes the flow feel a bit mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words and separating your ideas into distinct paragraphs would significantly improve the structure and readability of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message effectively, such as 'unfortunately', 'extremely sorry', and 'transportation'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'I thank that will be great idea' (should be 'I think') and 'save your time and confusion abut the address'. While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise control over common collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural expressions for giving advice would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'I will be home until evening' (which implies you will not be home at all), 'don’t missed the stop' (should be 'don't miss'), and 'rather then' (should be 'rather than'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as missing commas and incorrect capitalization of names like 'maya'. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent a higher score.
