IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sarah

I received your letter a few days ago. I am extremely happy that you are coming to stay with me on 06th September. I really enjoyed our last stay together when we went to the museum and had delicious meals together.

Unfortunately, the day you are arriving is a working day and I have an important meeting that I can't miss. As a result, I won't be able to pick you up from the station. I will put the house keys in the mail box. Please collect the keys by yourself after reaching my house.

Since you have to come alone from station, I will suggest you to take a cab from station parking. You will be luggage with you so using public transport will not be a comfortable or convenient option.

I will come back at 8 pm. and after that we will take dinner together at a nearby Italian restaurant.

Hope to see you soon. Have a a safe journey.

Yours Truly

Jamil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained the key arrangement, provided directions from the station, and suggested an evening activity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. To improve, you could provide slightly more detail in the instructions, such as specifying which mailbox or providing a landmark for the restaurant, to fully develop the ideas. However, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. Ideas are sequenced clearly, moving from the arrival details to the logistics and finally the evening plans. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As a result' and 'Since', to link ideas. However, the transition between the key collection and the transport advice is slightly abrupt. To reach a higher band, ensure that sentences flow more naturally into one another and use a wider variety of linking words to connect your thoughts more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'convenient', 'collect', and 'arrangements' appropriately. There are some minor errors, such as 'You will be luggage with you', which should be 'You will have luggage with you'. Additionally, 'I will suggest you to take' is slightly unnatural; 'I suggest you take' or 'I recommend taking' would be better. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or idiomatic expressions would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as '06th September' (the '0' is unnecessary), 'from station' (missing the article 'the'), and 'Have a a safe journey' (repetition). The sentence 'You will be luggage with you' is a significant error that affects grammatical accuracy. To improve, focus on proofreading for small errors like missing articles and prepositions, and try to incorporate a greater variety of complex sentence structures to demonstrate better control.
