Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mummy,
I hope you are doing find and well. I'm so excited that you are coming to stay with me next week, i understand that your train arrives in the morning, but unfortunately i will not be home until evening.
Therefore, i have made some arrangement to make you comfortable.
Regarding access to the house, i have left a spare key with Mr Fuja, my neighbour. He live at number 5 Ranti Alabi Drive, our house is directly opposite his own. Just knock his gate and tell him your name.
Alternatively, you can the flower pot outside our house. I have also informed the Estate security of your arrives, so they will let you in.
As for getting here from the train station, the easiest way is to take a taxi or uber to No 7 Ranti Alabi Drive off Raji oba, Ikeja. The journey usually takes 30-40 minutes if there is no traffic on the Road. If you prefer public transportation , you can take a bus from the terminal to Oshodi, from there to Ikeja Inside , our house is green-colour duplex with a very big mango tree in front just after two building from the junction.
I anticipate coming home at approximate 4:30pm. when i arrive, i will cook dinner then we eat do some catching up together.
Please, text me when you arrive at the train station so that i know that you are safe.
I can wait to see you mum.
till then, take care.
Bimbo.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements with Mr. Fuja, provided specific directions from the train station, and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and personal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the scenario provided. To reach a higher band, ensure that all instructions are followed precisely; for instance, you mentioned two different ways to access the house (the neighbor and the flower pot), which is helpful but could be slightly confusing. Overall, the task is fully accomplished.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the arrival logistics to the house access, then to directions, and finally to the evening plans. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct topics. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore,' 'Regarding,' and 'Alternatively,' which help the flow of information. However, some transitions could be smoother, and the connection between sentences is occasionally a bit mechanical. The use of referencing (e.g., 'his own,' 'there') is generally clear, though some minor improvements in sentence linking would enhance the overall readability and flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'duplex,' 'terminal,' and 'anticipate' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'doing find' instead of 'doing fine' and 'arrives' instead of 'arrival.' While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. You have attempted to use some descriptive language, such as 'green-colour duplex,' which adds clarity. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('He live' instead of 'He lives') and punctuation (the lowercase 'i' used as a pronoun throughout the letter). Additionally, there are some minor errors in article usage and preposition placement. While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to basic grammatical rules like capitalization and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentences.
