IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manjinder,

I am super happy to know that you are coming to stay with me. we will be going to have fun. unfortunately, my work done at 4pm so will not be at home until 5pm, as I have an hour drive from work to home.

As, I already asked my neighbour to let you in the house, because he has extra keys of my house so can open door for you. So when you arrive at my location just go straight to my neighbour"s house.

When you arrive at train station, There is a call for taxi sign board just right by ticket counter. You can call for taxi from there and come home comfortably.

Once you go home you can rest as you will be tired. I will cook some food for you so you can eat from the fridge. I will be home by 5pm. Then we will go for movie and then, I have reservation in your favorite restaurant for dinner.

I am very excited to see you.

best wishes,

Simarnjeet kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements involving your neighbour, provided instructions for the taxi from the train station, and specified your arrival time along with evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To improve, ensure that you provide slightly more detail in your explanations; for example, when mentioning the neighbour, you could specify their name or house number to make the instructions more realistic and helpful for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the arrival arrangements to the station instructions and finally to the evening plans. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and repetitive (e.g., starting multiple sentences with 'So' or 'Then'). Using a wider variety of linking words and phrases, such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'Once you have settled in', would improve the flow and make the connections between your ideas more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'reservation' and 'comfortably'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'my work done at 4pm' (should be 'my work finishes') and 'call for taxi sign board' (should be 'taxi rank' or 'taxi stand'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations will help elevate your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'we will be going to have fun' (should be 'we will have fun'), 'As, I already asked' (incorrect comma usage), and 'neighbour"s' (incorrect punctuation). Additionally, there are issues with verb tense consistency and articles (e.g., 'at train station' should be 'at the train station'). To reach a higher band, you should focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation errors.
