IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Samir,

I am pleased to know that you are going to come on Friday, and will stay with me for few days. Due to professional commitments, unfortunately I will not be able to come to railway station in the morning. However, I will make some arrangements foe you to stay. I have made some space in my cupboard, so you can organize your essentials in that. Moreover, you can use a restroom attached to the entrance.

Firstly, when you arrive at Rajkot railway junction, just go straight to the taxi stand and book a cab for my home. Most importantly, you need to be aware of pick pocketers on the station and try to make sure your luggage won't get missed.

I have made some plans for the evening, like first we will go to the park, where we used to play in our childhood. After that, we will go for a dinner at famous Indian bistro, and then we will decide plans for weekend.

Looking forward to see you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Nilay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained the key arrangements, provided directions from the station, and outlined your evening plans. However, the first bullet point regarding the keys was not fully addressed; you mentioned making space in a cupboard and a restroom, but you did not explicitly state how Samir will gain access to the house (e.g., leaving a key with a neighbor or under a mat). This is a minor omission that prevents a higher score. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the ideas are relevant to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'After that' to guide the reader. However, the transition between the key arrangements and the directions is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, 'my home' in the second paragraph could be more naturally phrased as 'my house'. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is sufficient for a task of this nature.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'professional commitments' and 'essentials'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'pick pocketers' (should be 'pickpockets') and 'luggage won't get missed' (should be 'luggage won't go missing'). You also used 'famous Indian bistro', which is a good descriptive phrase. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'come on Friday, and will stay with me for few days' (missing 'a' before 'few'), 'come to railway station' (missing 'the'), and 'Looking forward to see you' (should be 'looking forward to seeing you'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and verb patterns following specific phrases.
