IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Raman,

I hope you enjoys your journey because it’s first time u are coming by train in the morning and I will not be there around you until 5 pm.

As u know, I am working as a full- time worker from 7am to 5 pm. I am supposed to be not there but I am done with some preparations for you such as made some breads to eat with tea and lunch for the afternoon. I also put the keys in the small hole on the right side of the house because I feel it’s more safe their and nobody else can see because it’s not much visible unless I told someone.

I know it’s really hard for you to get at home alone because the train station is not only big enough but also little confusing as well. So, the best solution is that when u get off from the train just go directly to cabs area and book the taxi by giving them my home address.

I will be at home in the evening around 5 pm if there will not be any traffic on the road. I planned to dinner at nearest restaurant our home. Although, we talked with each other on regular basis but I am eagerly waiting to play some video games with u in the night time which ones we played in the childhood. I want to recall some college memories as well.

I am eagerly waiting for you to see u.

Your cousin,

Abc

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explained the key arrangement, provided instructions for the taxi, and suggested evening activities. However, the tone is occasionally inconsistent, and some ideas are slightly under-developed or phrased in a way that sounds unnatural, such as the description of the key location. While the task requirements are met, the development of ideas could be more precise to ensure the reader fully understands the instructions. Overall, the response is relevant and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'As u know' and 'Although', but the transitions between sentences can feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing, such as 'which ones we played in the childhood', is slightly awkward and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between your ideas would help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, but there are several instances of unnatural word choice and minor errors. For example, 'full-time worker' is slightly redundant, and 'more safe their' contains a spelling error ('there') and an awkward collocation. Phrases like 'big enough' and 'little confusing' are quite basic. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary, such as 'convenient', 'straightforward', or 'reminisce', rather than relying on simple descriptive phrases. The errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the sophistication of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. You have frequent grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you enjoys', 'it’s first time u are coming', and 'I planned to dinner'. The use of 'u' instead of 'you' is inappropriate for a formal or semi-formal letter. While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain errors in verb tense or preposition usage. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and avoid informal abbreviations. Increasing the number of error-free sentences will significantly improve your score in this criterion.
