IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Taran,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I received your letter in which you mentioned you are coming home. However, I would not be at home when you come.

I read your letter you are coming in the morning by train. Unfortunetly, I have urgent work on that day. I have vital meeting with the overseas clients. So I have made arrangements for you. You would never be feel uncomfortable. I already gave the keys of the home door to the neighbour's aunt. She will provide you keys when you will reach at home. So do not worried about that.

Additionally, my relative will received you from the station. I asked about you to them and they agree after picking you, they will drop you at home.

Undoubtly, I will come at the evening. Then we will either extremely enjoy and eat dinner together. At the late night, we will enjoy gossip and make fun.

I hope you understand my problem. See you soon at my home.

Kind regards,

Tejwant

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement with the neighbour, provided instructions regarding the station pickup, and stated your arrival time while suggesting evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for instance, you could have provided the specific name or address of the neighbour to make the instructions more practical. Overall, the message is clear, and the purpose of the letter is fully achieved.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'So' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the shift from discussing the keys to the station pickup could be smoother. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural rather than just a list of instructions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'gossip and make fun' (which is not idiomatic in this context) and 'vital meeting' (which should be 'a vital meeting'). You also have some spelling errors like 'Unfortunetly' and 'Undoubtly'. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and check your spelling of common adverbs. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise descriptive terms would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I would not be at home' (should be 'will not'), 'You would never be feel uncomfortable' (incorrect verb form), and 'my relative will received you' (should be 'receive'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they indicate a lack of control over verb tenses and auxiliary verbs. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
