IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing great and ready for the departure from Pokhara. I hoping to see you on Monday afternoon; unfortunately, I will not at home today evening to see you.

I made few arrangements for you so your stay might go smoother. I placed main door entrance key besides the flower pot on the left side of building which is next to shoes shelf. Similarly, if you decides to go anywhere in town you can leave the key on same place.

Central Train Station Kathmandu is almost 20 minutes away from our house by car . There are two alternative ways to come . Either you can take metro near CTC mall or you can take public bus; which is more affordable and convenient. However, it takes significantly longer time than metro.

I have been planning few activities we could do together on that evening when we meet. Firstly, we could go for cycling; there is a cycling trail near grocery store we can start from there and end up near lake. Secondly, swimming on our own swimming pool on our backyard.

I wish you have a safe journey excited to see you.

Kind Regards,

Keshav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided directions from the station, and suggested evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, ensure that all instructions are fully developed; for instance, the directions could be slightly more specific regarding the route from the station to the house, as '20 minutes away' is a bit vague. However, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader would have no trouble following your instructions. The response is well-structured and addresses the prompt comprehensively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'However', and 'Firstly' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words rather than relying on simple sequence markers. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics, which helps the reader navigate the information easily. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'arrangements', 'affordable', and 'convenient'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'departure from Pokhara' (instead of 'your departure') and 'swimming on our own swimming pool' (should be 'in'). While you attempt to use some descriptive language, some phrasing is slightly unnatural. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would enhance the quality of your writing. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the meaning is always clear, and the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the necessary information effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I hoping' (missing auxiliary verb), 'I will not at home' (missing verb), and 'if you decides' (subject-verb agreement). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of auxiliary verbs. While you attempt complex sentences, the accuracy in these structures is inconsistent. Increasing your control over basic grammatical rules will help you achieve a higher score, as the current frequency of errors is noticeable.
