A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Harman,

I was absolutely delighted to hear that you are coming to live with me. I am sue you'll love this place.

So I'm writing regarding that you will be here in morning. However, unfortunately I will be not their until evening.

But I haven't only set your room for you but also made your favorite lunch which is kept on the front table of kitchen. Furthermore, you can grab the key from our security guard let him know just your name.

I want to bring one more attention on how to get home from station. Interestingly, our home is so near to the train station so you not have to worry about that. I have already shared the location with you so you can just put on your phone as their is just 5 minutes walk from the station.

I want to let you know that I will be back at 5 pm. After that I have plans for us as I have booked table in the famous hotel in this city with eye catching view. At the last we will see the fireworks from the tower.

Excited to see you and I hope you will love my plans.

Your Lovingly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement with the security guard, provided directions from the station, and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To improve, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for example, when mentioning the location, you could briefly describe a landmark near your house to make the directions more practical. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'After that' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'I want to bring one more attention on how to get home'. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences feel more natural rather than mechanical. Paragraphing is present, which helps the reader follow your message easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using phrases like 'absolutely delighted', 'eye catching view', and 'security guard'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am sue' (sure) and 'famous hotel' (perhaps 'restaurant' is more accurate for a meal). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives and idiomatic expressions that sound natural in a personal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I will be not their' (there), 'you not have to worry', and 'there is just 5 minutes walk'. These errors are frequent but do not generally impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct placement of adverbs and prepositions. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will help you achieve a higher score, as currently, the accuracy of your grammar is inconsistent.
