IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Deep,

I am ecstatic to hear that you are coming to spend your time with me and i already have planed everything from pick you from train station to my house.

As you know i am working as early childhood educator and on saturday , we have held graduation party so can not take day off to pick you up but i will handover the keys to my friend and i told her about your time when you are arriving as well as she will help you if you need anyway.

Its very convenient to get bus from Union train station to my house because when you will get off the train, opposite side you will see bus station and you have to get 501 bus which goes vicinity of my house.

I will be at home at 6:15 PM and we will have a fun together as i already have booked reservation in famous restaurant for dinner then we will go for movie at night show.

I am eagerly waiting for you and hope you will understand my situation and easily find the way to come house.

Lovingly,

Gurpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific instructions for the bus route from the station, and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for example, you could clarify exactly where the friend lives or how the relative will contact her. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As you know' and 'because', to link your thoughts. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the punctuation, particularly regarding commas and capitalization, occasionally interrupts the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using phrases like 'ecstatic', 'handover', and 'vicinity'. While these are appropriate, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'have a fun together' (should be 'have fun together') and 'come house' (should be 'come to my house'). You also have some spelling errors, such as 'planed' instead of 'planned'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure consistent spelling to enhance the overall clarity and sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that, while they do not impede communication, are noticeable. Examples include missing articles ('get bus', 'at night show'), incorrect verb forms ('have planed'), and inconsistent capitalization of the pronoun 'I'. Additionally, some sentence constructions are slightly awkward, such as 'I told her about your time when you are arriving'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
