IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Jhon,

I’m really looking forward to having you stay with me. I’m sorry that I won’t be able to be at home when you arrive in the morning, but I have made some arrangements so that you can get into the house easily.

I have left a spare set of keys with our next-door neighbour, Mrs Sharma. She knows that you are coming and will be expecting you. Just ring her doorbell and tell her your name. She will give you the keys and show you where the house is. Once you get inside, please make yourself comfortable and feel free to use anything you need.

From the train station, the easiest option is to take an auto-rickshaw. It should take around 15 minutes. I have also sent you my full address and location on WhatsApp, so you can show it to the driver if necessary.

I should be home by around 6:30 p.m. We can have dinner together and then go for a walk around the neighbourhood. If you are not too tired after your journey, we could also watch a movie at home.

See you soon!

Best wishes,

Mamta

The ideas are well-developed and the response is focused, ensuring the reader has all the necessary information to navigate their arrival and your subsequent meeting. No parts of the task were omitted, and the information provided is logical and practical.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-structured with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the visit, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Once you get inside' and 'From the train station', to transition between ideas. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal or semi-formal letter, and the referencing is clear throughout. The flow of information is natural and there is no confusion regarding the sequence of events or the instructions provided.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

Phrases like 'make yourself comfortable', 'easiest option', and 'after your journey' are natural and accurate. The language is precise and conveys the intended meaning without any ambiguity. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate, it is consistently accurate rather than highly sophisticated, which is perfectly sufficient for this task type. There are no spelling or word-choice errors, and the tone remains consistently polite and welcoming.
