IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I am writing this letter to share information regarding to your trip to my home. Last week, I read your letter in which you described that you are coming at my house. Therefore, I am very much excited to meet you.

Unfortunately, I would not able to come for picking you up from the railway station in morning due to my final exam which will complete till 5 o'clock in the evening. However, when you will reach at station, you may take no. 5 train which will drop you nearby my house. After that, my neighbour will pick you up from there as well as will assist you in reaching my home. In addition to that, he has my spare home key so that you can do some rest until I will get back to home.

Meanwhile, when we will catch-up during evening time, we will explore the museum followed by eating lunch in the thai hotel.

Please, let me know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Asthma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions from the station, and suggesting evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the suggestion to 'explore the museum' is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you could add more detail, such as why you chose that museum or what specific exhibit you are interested in. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized logically into paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In addition to that', and 'Meanwhile' to link your ideas. While these are generally used correctly, the flow between sentences could be improved to sound more natural. For instance, the transition between the neighbor picking up the relative and the key arrangement is a bit mechanical. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal/semi-formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'assist', 'arrangements', and 'explore'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'eating lunch in the thai hotel' (which is illogical for an evening plan) and 'do some rest' (should be 'get some rest'). Additionally, 'coming at my house' should be 'coming to my house'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and prepositions to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to share...' and '...when you will reach at station, you may take...'. However, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and prepositions. For example, 'I would not able to' should be 'I will not be able to', and 'when we will catch-up' should be 'when we catch up'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your control over complex structures will help improve your score.
