IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jaivik,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am very excited that you are coming after long time.

The reason I am writing this to let you know that I will not be available in the morning as I am currently in Barrie. I am really sorry because I needed to go for an urgent work. But I would be at home around at five pm. However, I have already made some arrangements for you. Firstly, go to the neighbors, I have dropped keys to them and the tiniest key ,out of all, is the main key to the house.

Since you are coming from the Go station, you need to take 38 south bus and need to stop at Britannia. Afterwards, follow the house number until you find house number 56.

I have already made some food for you which will be inside the fridge. Moreover, there will be some snacks on the table as well. Do not be shy to eat those snacks.

I will meet you soon!

Yours sincerely,

Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained the key arrangements by mentioning the neighbor, provided clear directions from the train station, and stated your arrival time while suggesting food as an evening activity. However, the tone is slightly inconsistent; while it is a letter to a family member, the phrasing 'the reason I am writing this to let you know' is a bit formal and mechanical for a personal letter. Additionally, the suggestion for the evening is limited to eating food; expanding on a specific activity would have made the response more engaging and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Since', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the progression between sentences is occasionally a bit abrupt. For example, the transition from the directions to the food arrangements feels slightly disjointed. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format, and the overall structure is clear enough for the reader to follow your instructions without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use functional language like 'arrangements', 'urgent work', and 'fridge'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'dropped keys to them' (should be 'left the keys with them') and 'tiniest key' (which sounds a bit unnatural in this context). The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band score. More natural phrasing would improve the flow of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'coming after long time' (missing 'a'), 'I would be at home around at five pm' (redundant 'at'), and 'go to the neighbors' (missing 'my'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the reader can easily understand your instructions. To improve, focus on article usage and prepositional phrases. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the letter follows the standard conventions of a personal correspondence.
