IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Great to hear you will be coming to Klang this Saturday. I am not at home during the time you arrive. But I will leave the key at home. You could get into the house when you arrive.

To get to my house by LRT, you must take LRT Johan Setia line and then drop at Bukit Tinggi station. You need to follow the signboard stating Botanic Lake Garden. Once you reach exit, you will a traffic light in front of you. You must cross the traffic light and walk all the way down the hill until the end. My house is just located at the corner. I will leave the key in the letter box for you to get into the house.

I will be reaching home about 6pm. Then I will bring you to a lake side event which is held by our community for promoting Klang local food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained the key arrangements, provided directions from the train station, and specified your arrival time along with a suggestion for the evening. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the directions are functional but lack descriptive detail, and the evening plan is mentioned very briefly. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your ideas, perhaps by adding a bit more personal tone or specific details about the event, which would make the letter feel more natural and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required bullet points. This makes the information easy to follow. You use some basic cohesive devices, such as 'Once you reach' and 'Then', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the transition between the directions and the key location is slightly repetitive. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a smoother, more sophisticated flow between your sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and clearly conveys your message. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'LRT', 'signboard', and 'traffic light'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances where the word choice could be more natural, such as 'reaching home' instead of 'getting home' or 'arriving home'. There is also a slight lack of variety in your sentence starters and descriptive adjectives. To improve, try to incorporate more varied vocabulary related to travel and social plans to make your writing more engaging.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'I am not at home during the time you arrive' would be more natural as 'I will not be at home when you arrive'. Additionally, 'you will a traffic light' is missing a verb ('you will see'). There are also minor issues with prepositions and articles. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
