IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam,

I'm glad that your are coming for a visit to my town. It's been ages since we last caught up properly.

Unfortunately, I have an important business meeting on the day you are arriving. However, I'm going to leave my house key under the carpet in front of the main door. Then, you won't have any difficulties entering the house.

Also, the bus service from the train station is exceptional, hence, you can get a bus easily to reach my place, but make sure to catch route number 101, this will drop you off at the bus stop right by my house.

I honestly can't wait to see you and talk about our school memories that we have together. Since you love Italian food, I have made a reservation for dinner at a new restaurant down by the waterfront. Having dinner by the water would be awesome and of course, my it's on me.

Safe travel,

Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement, provided specific instructions for the bus route, and proposed a concrete plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. There are no omissions, and the response flows logically from one point to the next, ensuring the reader understands all necessary information for their arrival and your subsequent meeting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Also', 'hence', and 'Since', which help to link your sentences and ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and supports the overall structure of the letter. The transition between the logistical details and the social plans is smooth, contributing to a coherent and easy-to-read piece of writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of a personal letter. Phrases like 'caught up properly', 'exceptional', and 'reservation' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is generally effective, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to reach a higher band. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning. The language used is natural and fits the informal tone required for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, though there are a few minor slips, such as 'your are coming' (should be 'you are') and 'my it's on me' (a slight redundancy). These errors are non-systematic and do not interfere with communication. Your control over punctuation and verb tenses is generally strong. To improve further, ensure you proofread for small typos and maintain consistency in sentence construction.
