IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Deep,

I hope this letter finds you well. By the way, I can not explain my excitement today as you are arriving to my home. Well, I have one thing to tell you that unfortunately I will be not present at the house ,the day you are arriving. Actually, I have to work for a couple of hours due to my colleague is not present on that day.

However, I have made all the arrangements in advance. I am living in Victoria street ( house no. 4) near by the HMGC hospital. Moreover, you will find the keys under the flower pot in the entrance of the door. Feel free to use all the facilities including bed, washroom and food.

In addition, you can get taxi or uber anything you want to have for reaching to the house from the train station. I would suggest to pick private taxi because it is quicker and comfortable to ride.

I will be arriving at home by 2 am in the evening. We will go to the cinema and after watching movie we will have good dinner together. It would be great fun together.

It would be a pleasure to hear from you.

Yours faithfully,

Khushi Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: key arrangements, directions, and evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. However, there are some logical inconsistencies. For example, you mention you will be home at '2 am in the evening', which is contradictory as 2 am is in the early morning. Additionally, the instruction to 'pick private taxi' is slightly vague. To improve, ensure that your details are logically sound and provide more specific information, such as the name of the train station or a specific landmark to help your relative navigate more easily.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the task. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally logical, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal/semi-formal letter. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother, avoiding short, choppy sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'arrangements', 'facilities', and 'unfortunately'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I can not explain my excitement' (better: 'I cannot express how excited I am') and 'pick private taxi' (better: 'take a private taxi'). Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'anything you want to have for reaching to the house'. Expanding your range of collocations and idiomatic expressions would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I will be not present' (should be 'I will not be present'), 'due to my colleague is not present' (should be 'because my colleague is absent'), and 'near by' (should be 'nearby'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors with spacing and capitalization. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of your writing.
