Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Jake,
I'm excited to hear that you are coming to the town for the weekend to spend time together, When I gone through the email about the timings of your arrival, I regret to inform that it would not be possible for me to receive you at the Railway station due to my meeting at the work which has been scheduled a month ago and I am the one to open that presentation to the client.
But not be hesitant about the homecoming anytime to my residence there is spare key given to my neighbor just across the door to Mr Weatherland who is retired police officer living with his wife. They will welcome you upon arrival at Stonecreek Avenue plaza. To brief about the direction from the station its simple as the subway will take you. directly from the London terminal station to the Park Avenue stop which is about 15 minutes on line 6 travelling west from the centre.
Furthermore I have attached phone numbers of neighbor incase you need more guidance about your journey from the station. I have planned a trip around the town to visit some historical sites and landscapes which London is well known for. See you brother at afternoon. Lunch will be on the table and don't forget to have ice-cream from the freezer.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions, and suggesting evening plans. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a family member, though it occasionally feels a bit formal or stiff given the relationship. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the requirements sufficiently. To reach a higher band, ensure that the tone remains consistent throughout; for example, the explanation regarding your work meeting is slightly wordy and formal, which contrasts with the casual nature of writing to a relative. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore' and 'But', to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt. For instance, the transition between the key arrangements and the directions could be smoother. Additionally, there are some minor issues with referencing, such as 'the neighbor' appearing without a clear prior introduction, which makes the flow slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clearer pronoun references would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'residence', 'guidance', and 'historical sites'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that slightly hinder the natural flow. For example, 'coming to the town' is less natural than 'coming to town', and 'receive you at the Railway station' is better expressed as 'meet you at the station'. There are also some minor errors in phrasing, such as 'across the door to Mr Weatherland'. While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. Examples include 'When I gone through' (should be 'When I went through'), 'it would not be possible for me to receive you' (tense inconsistency), and 'due to my meeting at the work' (unnecessary article). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices and missing periods. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage will significantly improve your score.
