Student answer (Band 5.5)

dear john

I hope you are good. i am writing this letter to inform you that i am really excited to meet you are soo long. but unfortunately i have to go in emergency meeting with boss as client is leaving vancouver tomorrow night. but you do not need to worry at all, i planed all arrangemnets for you. i will hand over the key to my most trusted driver (ramesha), he will pick you from train station for ride to home. i told him to hand over keys to you to get inside the house and relax. i will be back home by 7:30 pm as meeting will start at 3 pm and will take only 3-4 hours of discussion. as i will be busy it will be hard for me to answer your call that’s why, i already gave in your contract details also i will send his information to you once’s i get free.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explained the key arrangements, provided instructions regarding the driver and the station, and stated your arrival time. However, the task specifically asked you to suggest what you could do together that evening, which you failed to include. This omission prevents the response from being fully developed. Additionally, the tone is somewhat inconsistent; while it is a letter to a family member, the language is occasionally quite formal (e.g., 'inform you', 'contract details'), which feels slightly unnatural for a personal letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is presented as a single block of text, which makes it difficult to follow. In IELTS writing, you should use clear paragraphing to separate different ideas. While there is a logical flow from the arrival arrangements to the meeting schedule, the lack of paragraph breaks and the limited use of cohesive devices (such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition') make the text feel a bit disjointed. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure needs better organization to improve readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision expected at higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing, such as 'I hope you are good' and 'I planed all arrangemnets'. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'planed' instead of 'planned', 'arrangemnets', and 'ramesha' (which should be capitalized). The phrase 'once’s i get free' is grammatically incorrect and uses informal, non-standard English. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of common words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with capitalization ('i', 'john'), punctuation, and sentence structure. For example, 'i am really excited to meet you are soo long' is confusing and grammatically broken. You also have run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'I told him to hand over keys to you to get inside the house and relax. i will be back home...'. While your meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction limits your score in this category.
